FIELD DRESSING A DEER
A quality mount starts with proper field care. First thing is to get it field dressed as quickly as possible. Once the guts are gone you should cool your trophy down the quickest and most efficient way you can. The best way of course is to get it to your processor or taxidermist right away. If you have some traveling to do "ICE ICE ICE" ice down your trophy really good.
Call your taxidermist before your next hunting trip, find out all you can do to preserve your trophy of a lifetime.
CAPING DEER
''When you're making the cut up the back of the leg, as shown in "figure 2B", cut right on the hair line where the brown and white hair meet!''
SMALL MAMMALS- Do not gut the animal. If you take your small mammal to a taxidermist immediately, freeze in a plastic bag whole.
BIRDS- Do not gut the bird. Rinse off any blood on feathers, if you can not take your bird to a taxidermist immediately, freeze in a plastic bag , being very careful not to disturb feathers. Sliding the bird into pantyhose works well to protect feathers.
FISH- Do not gut the fish. Wrap fish in a soaking wet towel, make sure all the fins are laying neat to the body. Put in plastic sack and freeze.
